Genre Gig Poster Artist Statement

My idea for the project started out because I like all the examples I found from the Pop Art era. I really liked all the use of repetition, iconic images of the time period, and bright colors bordered by big black strokes.

Pop Art emerged in the 1950’s in England and found its way over to the United States in the late 1950’s. Pop art includes aspects from mass culture including advertising, comic books and other cultural objects. Pop art is often times defined by the artist’s means of reproducing and rendering techniques.

The band that I chose is Daft Punk. Daft Punk is an electro-house French duo whose shows consist of stimulating visual elements including, but not limited to a lot of the same colors that Pop Art is known for. The reason I chose to use Daft Punk for the band poster is mainly because of their work done in the recent film TRON. In the film TRON the use of bright colors and lasers and repetition is repeated throughout the film and I felt like Pop Art is easily related to the graphics and the use of the music in the film.

My work emulates the style of pop art because I have used a lot of bright colors and big bold black lines. I also have used a lot of repetition in my work. The main images in the piece also have a central focus about them and are easily visible.
